Siberian tiger and cub
Siberian tiger and cub (Panthera tigris altaica), Buffalo (NY) Zoo, 27 Feb 2008. Photographed by Dave Pape, released to public domain by creator. From Wikipedia Commons.

One of the things we hope to do on our vacation with my folks is go to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.  Now, we are specifically going so my younger son can see the giant pandas, but I always think of line from The Wizard of Oz: ‘Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh my!’

In addition, my eldest daughter just finished her 8th Grade year with honors (she made the Honor Roll all four grading periods this last year!), and her middle-school mascot was a tiger!

And finally, this is a magnificent picture that was ‘Picture of the Day’ a few days ago on Wikipedia Commons, and I thought it deserved to be shared with all of you as well. You can read all about Siberian tigers on Wikipedia if you wish.

So there are my three reasons for choosing this today! Wow! More reasons than usual! Click on the picture to see it / download it full-sized (which is rather large – you are warned!)

Snowdrop

Snowdrop, illustrated by Nellie Benson, from _A Flower Fantasy_ by Eden Coybee, 1901. From the Project Gutenberg e-book.

Here is an illustration from the oddly named book Dumpy Books for Children No. 7: A Flower Fantasy”. It pictures snowdrops, which I picked because they are among the first flowers to come up in spring. The often come up through the snow, and are sometimes referred to as ‘The Fair Maid of February.’ So here she is in all her loveliness. I found her in a Project Gutenberg e-book.

The illustrations for A Flower Fantasy were made by Nellie Benson. She illustrated the entire book with little personifications of the plants about whom the story is told in the book. Click on this ‘Fair Maid’ to see or download the image full-sized.

Victorian Man and Boy in Snowstorm

'The Boy Decided to Look for Other Work'; illustration for the story 'The Stone that Gathered No Moss', _The Book of Knowledge_, Vol. 19, pg. 6024, 1919. Scanned by author. Book in author's collection.

This is a scan from the 1919 children’s encyclopedia set that I purchased at an estate sale. Called The Book of Knowledge: The Children’s Encyclopedia, I found and bought 18 of the original 20 volumes. This picture was an illustration for the story “The Stone that Gathered No Moss” (Vol.19; pp. 6023-6025). But since I am sort of on a winter theme with the Daily Public Domain images, I felt it would fit in perfectly! (Especially the way our weather has been – in the 20s (F) one day, the 50s (F) the next – with all the snow melting, then plunging tempuratures the next day with more snow. Apparently the Lake Erie weather can’t make up its mind this year!) Click on the picture to see it/ download it full-sized.

Peace, and stay warm!

Cover of the ‘People’s Home Journal’, January 1896, featuring a couple on a sleigh ride. From the ‘Public Domain Art’ Yahoo email list.

Here is a wonderful scan of an 1896 magazine cover, which was uploaded to the “Public Domain Art” Yahoo list some time back. Alas, this fine list has sunk into inactivity – though I admit I am as guilty as the rest of allowing it to do so, and perhaps more so, as I have such an extensive collection of public domain art.

This particular cover has a delightful line illustration of a couple on a sleigh ride along a country road. I don’t know the name of the artist. Click on the image to see it / download it full-sized.

"Central Park, Winter", Currier & Ives, date unknown.

I do not know the date of this Currier and Ives print, only that it was republished in a pre-1923 collection of prints, from which a member of the Yahoo group “Public Domain Art”  (Lynn – thanks Lynn!) scanned it. But it is so appropriate for the season. Tons of people skate on the pond, with the familiar bridge in the background. Judging by what they are wearing, I’d say it was the 1860s or so (Civil War Era). Click on it to see it / download it full sized.

Enjoy!

“A man shooting a rabbit”,l snowy woodland scene, c. 1866. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, LC-USZ62-51229.

I found this c. 1866 illustration in the Library of Congress digital collections, where it is filed as an advertisement or a label. But I do not know what product! The label itself does not say, though the flag on the cabin in the background says Jacob Shaffer Cooperstown PA. Beneath the illustration in tiny letters it says Entered according to an act of Congress in the year 1866 by Jacob Shaffer; in the Clerk’s office of the District Court of the Eastern District of Penn. But what Jacob Shaffer was selling, I have no idea!

But the most fun thing about this picture is the title at the bottom: A Man Shooting a Rabbit. Have fun figuring out why it has that title!

"Frost" by Bertha Boynton Lum (1869-1954), c. 1920. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, LOC #LC-DIG-ppmsca-10484.

Bertha Boynton Lum (1869-1954) was an American artist who was so influenced by Japanese art that she moved to Japan for a time. She studied the techniques of traditional Japanese arts and painted and made prints of scenes of Japan and Japanese life.

This print seemed appropriate for this time of year. It is from c. 1920 and is called Frost. I found it in the Library of Congress digital collections. Click on it to view it / download it full-sized.

I seem to be on an animal kick this week with images. But this one is both animals and Winter! And, since in a few weeks we will be having the Winter Olympics again, it is even more appropriate, I think.  I found it on Wikipedia Commons (the graphic repository for Wikipedia).

Poster for the 1924 Olympics in France. Artist unknown. From Wikipedia Commons.

This is a poster for the 1924 Winter Olympic games in France. Between the Eagle and the bobsledders, I thought it a perfect for this week. Notice there isn’t much to the bobsled, and oddly enough, they show 5 men on it – when as far as I know, there are only 2- and 4-man bobsled competitions. Oh well, it does sort of look like the eagle is about to snatch one for lunch, so maybe it will work out in the end…

I know we haven’t gotten nearly as much snow as some other places but with the cold temperatures, it sure feels artic around here. So, in honor of the snow (still falling after 24 hrs of near constant fall) and cold, here are some polar bears I found in the National Digital Library of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The rights listed on both are public domain, though they request that you list USFWS as the source and name the photographer as a courtesy. Click on the images to see/download them full-sized.
