Here’s a very Halloween image for you: a photo of heap of bones. Though it is creepy, it is not from a war or a massacre. It is from a cemetery in Cuba that, for over the last hundred years, has been pressed for space. Currently, in the Colon Cemetery in Havana, Cuba, remains [bones at that point] are removed from the tombs after 3 years, boxed, and stored. A hundred years ago, it was not so orderly.
This picture is a print of a series taken at the Colon necropolis by the Detroit Publishing Company at the turn of the 20th c., and is now part of the digital collections of the Library of Congress.

Photo of Heap of Bones in Cristobal Colon Cemetery / Necropolis, c. 1895-1910. Detroit Publishing Co Collection, Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Div., LOC #LC-D4-21574.
