Yesterday, the US Women’s gymnastics team took Gold! Yeah! Though, prancing around in their skin tight leotards is a far cry from the women’s gymnastics teams of yesteryear:

Congratulations to the British men’s gymnastics team on taking a medal during their team competition over the weekend. I couldn’t find any pictures of British male gymnasts taken in 1908, but I found this one of Edward William Potts (1881-1944), who did compete in the 1908 London Games, finishing 9th in the men’s individual all-around gymnastics competition. He was a part of the bronze medal winning British gymnastics team in 1912.

Notice the shoes and knickers as part of the uniform. Yes, they competed with shoes on:

Italian Gymnast Alberto Braglia (1883-1954) at the 1908 London Games. He went on to win gold overall in the 1912 Stockholm Games. Notice that he is competing wearing shoes. From Wikimedia Commons.
