Home from the War

"Home from the War", Harper's Weekly, Vol. 7, No. 337, p. 381, 13 June 1863. Artist Unknown. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, LOC # LC-USZ62-129687.

Here we have a happier image of Union soldiers in the Civil War. This print, from Harper’s Weekly Magazine in June 1863, shows soldiers home on leave meeting up with loved ones: Kissing wives, lifting babies, etc. At this point the War had gone on for 2 years, and Union victory was by no means foreseeable. This idealized picture was as much a hope for soldiers to come home for good as anything else.
