Women’s Clothing 1178-1410: Tunics, Kirtles, and Basic Dress

How to read these abstracts [descriptions] and use them with the images:

Each image is saved with a file name consisting of  [date]-[name of artwork]. The date of the artwork is at the beginning of each abstract and the name of the artwork is in italics. The image matching:

1282 – Italy – Arnolfo di Cambio – Thirsty Woman – Marble – Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, Perugia, Italy

would have the file name:

            1282-ThirstyWoman

All punctuation - [ ]’:,  etc -  is left out of file names, but are included in the abstracts. Thus:

            1265-1268 – Italy – Nicola Pisano – The Crucifixion [Detail 2] – Marble – Duomo, Siena, Italy

would have the file name:

            1265-1268-TheCrucifixion-Detail2

Accents, tildes, and other special characters are also not used in file names, thus ‘Pietà’ becomes ‘Pieta’, etc. Occasionally, more than one artwork of a specific date shared a title, and are distinguished by [1],[2],etc. However, if one image satisfies the criteria of a CD and another does not, you may have just [2] on the specific CD you own. Don’t fret that [1] is not there! This also applies to close-up details of artworks – sometimes [Detail 3] satisfies the needs of a CD but [Detail 1] and [Detail 2] didn’t!

All file names are listed according to how the computer ‘alphabetizes’ things. Thus, images with a range of dates [i.e. 1283-1284] come before those with just one year [1283], and if a date has a ‘c’ [1310-1319c] on the end [for ‘circa’], it falls in the ‘c’s no matter what the name of the artwork is.

The information in the abstracts are arranged thusly:

[date of artwork] – [country of artist] – [name of artist] – [name of artwork] – [medium used] – [location of original]

Abbreviations used at the end of dates are:  c: ‘circa / about’ [1310-1319c is ‘circa 1310-1319] and ante: ‘before’ [1331ante is ‘before 1331’.]

Please keep in mind that sometimes a specific date for an image could not be found and thus only a range of dates is listed. Sometimes this is the life of the artist because nothing more specific is known. My apologies for any trouble this may cause.

Also bear in mind that the locations of the artworks were determined to the best of my ability BUT that being unable to visit all the museums personally, I had to rely on other sources. If you wish to see an image in person PLEASE VERIFY that it is indeed located where it is listed. Museums loan images to other museums, put them in storage, close exhibits for renovations, sell images to raise money, etc. Indeed, my information may be incorrect or out of date, despite my best efforts otherwise. DO NOT make expensive and time-consuming travel plans without first checking!

Some images are listed as being in a ‘Private collection’ if no further data as to a public venue could be found.
